The Bests of Koh Samui, Thailand
The island of Koh Samui is so blessed with bests - from value vilas to beaches - that we couldn’t resist putting them altogether in one place. Read on if you want a Thai holiday filled with all the favorites, as chosen by our guests…
Thailand is full of Buddhas - which one is the best? See below
Our guests are falling for Koh Samui and so are we, drawn by the amazingly value for your money and out of this world experiences. These are the favorite places, experiences and activities they cite most often, along with a few hidden bests we’ve dug up on our own:
Best Time to Go
Mid-December to mid-January, and then again in August, sees the most visitors to Koh Samui, but we like the pleasant weather (and thinner crowds) of March and April best.
Best Hidden Beach
There are lots of beaches on Koh Samui and most stay busy throughout the tourist season. If you’re looking for a little more privacy, try Tongsai Bay. It’s a little difficult to get to via public transport, but the tranquility is well worth it.
Best Big Buddha
This one’s a cliche, but Koh Samui’s biggest Buddha (called, of course, the Big Buddha) is its best and a must-see. The 80-foot tall deity is a sight in sparkling gold.
Best Odd Attraction
The Mummified Monk is worth a stop for the off-kilter, or just anyone who wants to break from the beach-buddha norm. This pious fellow died meditating in the lotus position and was embalmed that way too for all to see. A visit to the monk is said to bring good luck.
Best Value Villas
Rice House (above left): It’s hard to believe that this two-bedroom, staffed home goes for a mere $300 per night in the low season, but Koh Samui is full of surprises. It sits 125 metres up on a mountainside.
Villa Baan Chang (above right): Pay the same as you would for a moderate hotel and this three-bedroom luxury villa is all yours. It’s traditionally Thai, but full of modern amenities.
